Last month, 200 ICE agents converged on Central Ohio targeting Somali and Mexican businesses and schools. For nearly two weeks, businesses and streets were deserted. People feared for their safety as they heard ICE thugs shoot, arrest, and deport US citizens, including veterans without any due process of law. Basically, Central Ohio was being terrorized by ICE agents in an operation called as Operation Buckeye that lasted from December 16 to December 21. The Ohio Immigrant Alliance said in a Jan. 9 news release that the organization identified at least 214 people arrested during "Operation Buckeye." The organization said in an analysis of publicly available jail rosters that 80 percent of the people detained were Latino and less than 10 percent were Africans. Durning that mass hysteria, I had three of my grandchildren with us for the winter break. When I told them I will be taking them to the public library, they were scared to death and said, "They are afraid they would be arrested by ICE agents." As a result, I have to have copies of my passport and theirs in my phone as well as separate photocopies in the car for the first time in my life to prove we are U.S. citizens. How do you explain to children aged 11, 9, and 4 years, that you are US citizens and therefore you're not subject for arrest?! I was heartbroken and decided for their sake to cancel the trip to the library. This week, Chris Rufo, a Manhattan Institute senior fellow, said during the interview with Laura Ingraham, "Somalis are stealing billions of dollars from American taxpayers" and called on President Donald Trump "to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for all Somalis in Minnesota". The president obliged. Now, President Trump has mandated the departure of 2,500 Somali nationals from the United States. The administration is terminating the (TPS) program for Somalia, compelling those under its protection to exit the U.S. Individuals affected by this change are required to leave by March 17 which is another form of collective punishment. President Trump raised real concern about a $250 million fraud case committed by 8 Somalis in the State of Minnesota and I do agree. But he conveniently ignores the over $1 BILLION in fraud cases committed during the same time period by another 79 Americans. Were those people who committed fraud white? Were they Jews? Were they devil-worshippers? That's misleading and inquiring minds want to know. Collective punishment is generally considered illegal in the United States. It is prohibited under international humanitarian law and is not compatible with the basic principle of individual responsibility. The Geneva Conventions and their protocols explicitly prohibit collective punishment. Additionally, the U.S. Constitution's Due Process Clause and the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment also support the view that collective punishment is not legal, according to Wikipedia. The fraud, while egregious, does not justify revoking legal protections for Somali immigrants. While some of the theft was perpetrated by people of Somali descent, the vast majority in the Somali community had nothing to do it. In America, guilt by association is illegal. The American legal system does not hold individuals responsible for the actions of others with whom they are associated or related to. The reality is the feds provide most of the funding and the states are responsible for administering the programs and making sure the applicants are eligible (Medicaid, Snap, Unemployment). The ones responsible for the fraud are the ones who perpetrated it and the individuals who pocketed money. The rest of the Somalis are guilty of nothing and innocent of all. To claim anything else is racism, plain and simple. Minnesota civil workers alerted higher ups of fraud but nobody at the top did anything. Why blame all the Somalis? If the majority of this egregious fraud was committed by Americans of European descent, it would be the system's fault. However, if Somali Americans were the perpetrators of the fraud, they should be punished according to rules of law. But to blame and target all innocent and law-abiding and call them garbage and low IQ people, that's racist, sickening and vile. The entire concept of NGOs is wide open to fraud. Anyone can setup an NGO and claim to be fulfilling a need and receive funding with no requirement to keep records of farther distribution. It's the people who committed the fraud who are at fault. But there is some blame to be put on the government here as well. The amount of money being taken from these programs from 2020-2024 should have warranted an investigation. This is a fraud story, not an immigration story. The Somali community represent only 1% of Minnesota's population. Mehdi Hasan is a British American journalist who recently released a stunning list of names of six American of European descent fraudsters and how their cases was handled by President Trump and US media. I bet most Americans have never heard about them. Here goes:  * Lawrence Duran who led the largest therapy related Medic Care Scheme in history. He defrauded the government and was sentenced to jail for 50 years and was ordered to $87 million and Trump commuted his sentence last year. * Trevor Milton who defrauded his investors of tens of millions of dollars. He was sentenced to only 4 years in prison and Trump pardoned him last year. * Paul Walzczak, he was a convicted fraudster who stole $7 million from his employees' paycheck. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and last year Trump pardoned him. * Michele Foire, who stole $700,000 meant for memorial to fallen police officers and spent it on herself, including cosmetic surgery. However, Trump pardoned her last year. * Philip Esformes who orchestrated the largest Medicare fraud in American history - over 1$ billion dollars in fraudulent claims. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but Trump commuted his sentence back in 2020. * David Gentile, he defrauded 10,000 investors of over $1.6 billions for which he was sentenced to seven years in prison. DJT pardoned him few weeks ago. For the last two weeks, reporters, freelancers, and YouTubers like Nick Shirley are swarming the state of Minnesota to report on so-called fraud at Somali-run daycare centers without permission and/or appointment, plus showing up at Money Transfer Services. Then Nick Shirley had the nerve to tell Somalis, "We are not attacking you guys. Fraud is fraud. This has nothing to do with race. This is fraud.” How about him showing up at the places of Eric Trump and other six white thieves who were sighted by Mehdi Hasan investigative report and telling them the same crap? After reading the list of white fraudsters, it is hard to escape the impression that President Trump and the mainstream media treat non-Somalis fraudsters differently and not based on their race or religion. Here is further proof. * Eric Trump's cancer charity was found guilty of misusing donor funds to help children with cancer at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a nonprofit facility dedicated to pediatric cancer research that has been helping children with brain tumors, leukemia, and other deadly cancers since 1962, changing thousands of lives for the better. But the Trump family reportedly used the donations for personal gain. In 2019, Trump had to pay pack back $2 million to eight charities. Fact is, "If you are raising money for X, and you give it to Y, that is fraud, even if Y is a charity," said James Fishman, a Professor of Law Emeritus, in an interview with Forbes. So let me be very clear, "If President Trump cares about the law only when it serves his agenda, he does not care about the law at all." The law is not selective, and no one should be above the law regardless of their status. After all, President Trump didn't read the Bible saying, "God says those who bless Somalia will be blessed, and those who curse Somalis will be cursed." Mahmoud El-Youseph is a Palestinian freelance writer and retired U.S. Air Force veteran.
