Israel's rape crisis centers got 55,000 complaints in 2023 and reported that 81% of sex offense cases closed without indictment for that year. Most victims were minors attacked by people they knew, according to a report by Eve Young in the Jerusalem Post on November 18, 2024. The JP is the largest English-language daily paper in Israel.
Among its latest and most highly publicized victim is Mia Schem, who is a French-Israeli national freed from Hamas captivity in November 2023. She filed a rape complaint against Tel Aviv fitness trainer Nati Avidan. “I am the complainant,” Schem stated.
Avidan, a prominent figure in Tel Aviv’s celebrity fitness scene, is under investigation for allegedly drugging and raping Schem three days before her wedding. Schem, who trained at Avidan’s studio, claims he invited her to an apartment, spiked her drink with a date-rape drug, and assaulted her. After the incident and being disoriented, she confided in a friend who took her to a hospital, where staff confirmed signs of rape.
Avidan is a familiar face on social media who is known for working with celebrities, including Crime Minister Netanyahu. Schem became a known face across the world after Hamas released a video of her in captivity just days after she was taken.
The former Israeli captive has admitted that she felt safer and more protected in Gaza than in Israel, according to the Hebrew Maariv newspaper report on March 5, 2025. That comes as a sharp contrast and contradicts the Israeli claim of gang rape, mutilation, and beheading of 40 babies on October 7, 2023.
Right after the war, the Israeli court have placed a gag order on the investigation of mass rape by Hamas fighters on Oct. 7, but commander Shelly Harush told parliament on Nov. 27 they have 1,500 testimonies on atrocities including sexual violence, rape and genital mutilation from survivors, security forces, first responders, and families of victims. At least a dozen graphic testimonies have been shared by government agencies and first responders. But where is the beef???
On Nov. 14, police showed reporters footage of an unnamed witness of the festival attack. In it, she said she saw gunmen gang rape one woman, cut off the breast of another, and throw it on the street. Later, she said a gunman shot the woman in the head while raping her. Police declined to name the witness or make her available to Reuters. Israel was able to get Genocide Joe and war criminal Tony Blinken to parrot the Israeli propaganda and fake news about October 7, mass rape, and beheaded babies.
Later reports by Haaretz concluded that the allegation of mass rape and beheading was a hoax. There were no apologies or retractions by our former President or his Sec. of State or even the Crime Minister of Israel who first made such claim. Are we supposed to believe outlandish claims by unknown witness???
After 19 months of Al-Aqsa Flood Operation, the state of Israel has failed to produce any evidence of rape or beheading on October 7. Nevertheless, Israeli lawyers still arrogantly argue that they do not need victim testimony. The non-consent of victims mostly does not need to be separately established if the acts take place during mass atrocities. Really?
When Israel's justice ministry told Reuters New on December 5, 2023 that "the victims were tortured, physically abused, raped, burned alive, and dismembered," Hamas vigorously denies the allegations of sexual assault or mutilation by its members. Taher al-Nono, the media advisor to the head of political bureau of Hamas, called for "a serious and impartial international investigation into the matter". But Crime Minister Netanyahu flatly rejected Hamas request. No wonder why? Obviously, the charges were simply phony.
"All the women who were murdered and may have suffered sexual violence cannot tell us," Hila Neubach, director of legal affairs at the Association for Rape Crisis Centers in Israel, told Reuters. "Witnesses perhaps too did not survive." Once again, no evidence, no witness, no proof, and no dress. This reminds me of the idiom, "Fish swim, birds fly, and Israelis lie!"
Meanwhile, back to Mia Schem's dilemma, the 23-year-old former hostage said her rapist persuaded her to host a meeting at her apartment by claiming he planned to introduce her to a Hollywood film producer, who he said was interested in possibly turning her story into a movie. Instead, she said she was sexually assaulted during that meeting. Miss Schem spent 55 days in Gaza before being released during the first ceasefire deal in November 2023. (Haaretz, May 4)
There is nothing in life a woman fears more than rape
There is nothing a woman fear in life more than being raped. Miss Schem, who is a tattoo artist, is still recovering from the gunshot wound, which was not properly treated in captivity. Schem described the alleged rape as re-traumatizing. "This was my biggest fear my whole life, before captivity, during captivity," she said. "And it happened to me after captivity, in my safest place." As a result, she has decided to separate from her fiancé and canceled their wedding, according to J Feed story on March 25, 2025
Avidan, the alleged rapist is in his 30s, was arrested in late March, and his home was searched and his phone and computer seized. He has been released from police custody but remains a suspect in the case.
She was then taken to the hospital for a medical examination, where it was determined that she had recently had sexual intercourse, of which she had no memory, according to the report.
Hebrew media outlets have also reported that inconsistencies have been found in his version of events, and that her alleged rapist was caught lying during a polygraph test on several occasions, including in response to a question about sexual assault. According to Ynet, the suspect initially told investigators he had never entered Schem’s bedroom — where she alleges, he raped her.
During a cross-examination in early April, however, he reportedly changed his account and said that he did enter Schem’s room while she was changing clothes, because he wanted to check the address of the apartment to send it to the third person joining them that night.
I don’t understand why Israel, who brags about being very highly technologically advanced, could not do a DNA test that quickly prove any guilt and a blood test specific drugs in Mia’s body.
The pro-genocide communities in France and the US throw Mia under the bus.
At first the pro-Israeli communities in France and the US came to her aid by inviting her to the city Riviera to raise awareness for the hostages still held in Gaza. She also was hosted by the mayor of Nice and addressed the city council as well as being on a tour to the Cannes Film Festival. But after she told the truth that she felt safer in Hamas captivity than Israel, Israel and its lobby in the US and Frace were embarrassed, mad, and angry at her and now they all ignore her and will not have anything to do with her.
Her first stop on the US tour was at the State of the Union address in Washington D.C. on March 7, 2025, where she received a special invitation from House Speaker Mike Johnson. Mia met with 40-50 bipartisan members of Congress, had a moving discussion in Hebrew with Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, U.S. special envoy to combat antisemitism; and had a speaking tour with major American TV networks.
My letter to NPR about the hostages on May 31, 2024
Dear NPR,
I listened yesterday to On Point host Meghna Chakrabarti interviewing three Israeli guests whose relatives were held in Gaza are among the hostages held in Gaza. Even though Israel holds many thousands of Palestinian hostages, surprisingly, there was no Palestinian guest invited to address the issue on the show.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to hold over 10,000 Palestinian political prisoners as hostages, including women & children, many of them without trial or charges for year. In addition, Israel is also holding the remains of 373 Palestinians. Their families are not allowed to have proper burials for their loved ones or pay their final respect.
I am a Palestinian-American citizen whose father and younger brother were both held captives by the IDF for 18 months at separate occasions (in 1948 and 1982 respectively) for no crime committed. I know the pain and suffering. I was saddened and disappointed that NPR chose not to invite a Palestinian guest to talk about the daily pain and suffering that Palestinian families whose loved ones are held by Israel go through on a daily basis. I was there myself.
That is just a friendly reminder to let you know that Palestinian lives matter too and your listeners deserve to know the whole truth and not be left in the dark about the dilemma of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.
Sincerely,
Mahmoud El-Yousseph
Retired USAF Veteran
PS: One year later, I am still waiting for response from NPR. At the very least, a courtesy response or thank you for writing to NPR.
And as far as Mia Schem is concerned, I hope she is smart enough to follow the path of ex-American Israeli hostage Edan Alexander. That is buying a one-way airplane ticket to her native country France instead of living on stolen Palestinian land.

On the top we have Mia Schem, one of the released captives of Hamas with before and after images,
she claims she was starved by Hamas in a recent interview and apparently said all Gazans are terrorists
a stark difference from the testimonies of all the other captives. Either way, she looks healthy and does
not have signs of starvation. On the bottom we have Farouq al-Khateeb, who was a hostage held by
Israel who had been neglected and malnourished in their custody and did not receive medical treatment
of any kind until his release wherein he was diagnosed with advanced stage stomach cancer
