Two weeks ago, I asked you to help conserve our oceans by asking the National Marine Fisheries Service to protect essential fish habitat in the ocean, and you responded - almost 8,000 people nationwide sent in their comments.

Now, a just-released comprehensive report on the state of our oceans from the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy confirms that our oceans are in trouble. The message of the report is clear - we need immediate action to protect and restore our fragile marine ecosystems.

The next step is for governors to submit their comments on the report to the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy. The Commissioners will then review these comments before finalizing the report and sending it to the President and Congress. This is a landmark opportunity to influence the future of our nation's ocean policy.

Please ask your governor to take advantage of this opportunity to conserve our oceans by supporting aggressive recommendations to protect and restore fragile ocean ecosystems. Then ask your family and friends to help by forwarding this e-mail to them.

Background

Our oceans are in trouble. The U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy has released a comprehensive report on the state of our oceans and the message is clear - we need immediate action to protect and restore our fragile marine ecosystems.

The U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy report concurred with other recent oceans reports: over-fishing, over-development of our coasts, habitat destruction and mismanagement are leading to the decline of ocean wildlife and the collapse of entire ocean ecosystems. More often than not, U.S. fisheries are managed in a piece-meal fashion on a species-by-species basis. This approach contributes to the rapid decline of the nation's seas. The Commission concluded that the U.S. needs a new management model that will treat ocean resources in a holistic approach with an emphasis on interrelated ecosystems.

This is the first congressionally-mandated report in 35 years to study the state of our oceans. The draft report, which has been issued to governors and select members of Congress, presents a landmark opportunity to shape future federal ocean policy. Governors now have until May 21 to submit comments on the draft report to the Commission. The Commissioners will then review these comments before finalizing the report and sending it to the President and Congress.

Please ask your governor to take advantage of this opportunity to protect our fragile ocean ecosystems by supporting aggressive recommendations to protect and restore our oceans. Then ask your family and friends to help by forwarding this e-mail to them.
