Hello!
Gosh, I always have so much to say and there's never really enough time or space to say it all in. I don't want to clog your boxes with mail. Mine is certainly full, but I enjoy staying abreast of all the news and so I don't mind. However, I am respectful of your time and storage limitations. I will keep this message themed to Louisiana (as much as possible)!
The first item is a blatant disregard by the Times-Picayune for the candidacy of Malcolm Suber, running for New Orleans City Council. Knowing how I've been treated in the "mainstream" media (MSM), I didn't dare let the omission pass without contacting the newspaper. Of course, somehow I held out hope that they were different given their outstanding coverage during the Katrina tribulations. In the case of candidate Suber, they are proving to wear the same blinders as many others in the MSM. Suber's candidacy showcases the Reconstruction Party--a new political party being formed around the country.
Secondly, students have organized themselves for a walkout on Monday. I look forward to participating in the Atlanta walkout, either in person or by telephone. Attached is the Atlanta flier, fyi.
Next, Vic Sadot who has a wonderful 9-11 Cheney song entitled, "Cheney's in the Bunker," but whose refrain I love: "Do the orders still stand, sir?" sent me two wonderful Katrina songs, one by him and the other one written by Ryan Harvey entitled, "New Orleans Got Iraqed." I provide the links for the three songs toward the end of this message.
Speaking of Iraq, we now know from yet another source, Spain, that in February of 2003, Bush, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, Condoleezza Rice, and others witnessed Bush say, "In two weeks we will be ready militarily. . . . We will be in Baghdad by the end of March." All the more reason that Bush, Cheney, AND Rice need to be impeached. However, with this week's news that Bush has quietly been advising Democratic contenders on Iraq, we can understand why none of them would commit to withdrawing troops during their first term ending in early 2013. Meanwhile, Democrats raised the debt limit to nearly $10 trillion. That's how much debt our country is in. Which candidates will talk about that as they feed an insatiable war machine?
Finally, the Jena 6 have been joined by the Palmdale (CA) 4. I'll provide the link at the end of this message. The footage from a local FOX News report speaks for itself. Clearly, Injustice is not just in Jena.
And before I close, kudos to Kimberly Wilder who wrote a wonderful Jena 6 piece for oped news entitled, "A White Person's Meditation on the Jena 6 Students." A link to her article closes out this message to you! Thanks for poring through this long missive!
1. Letter to Times-Picayune
On Monday, September 24, 2007, Mr. Frank Donze wrote an article entitled "Unexpected council race is crowded and confused." Unfortunately, Mr. Donze's article left me less informed than when I eagerly clicked on the New Orleans Times-Picayune website to become more informed of local New Orleans politics.
In a 6-epage article, Mr. Donze mentions a lot of candidates, but he does not mention them all! Surely this is not an oversight on the part of Mr. Donze! If so, then it is the responsibility of the award-winning Times-Picayune to correct such faulty reporting. Sadly, it did not. The Times-Picayune omission is all the more glaring because on page 39 of the Times-Picayune's own website for a September 7, 2007 article, it lists Mr. Suber as a qualified candidate for the City Council seat. Malcolm Suber is further mentioned in a March 15, 2007 article describing Suber's testimony before the City Council to prevent rent-gouging and unfair evictions by landlords. Obviously, Malcolm Suber is no stranger to the Times-Picayune.
Malcolm Suber is running for the City Council seat vacated by Oliver Thomas. He is running under the Reconstruction Party banner. Witnessing the utter failures, chronicled in your own newspaper, of all levels of government, Malcolm wants only one thing: that the dispossessed of New Orleans be allowed the right of return and that their return be facilitated by elected officials and public policy made in the people's name. The Reconstruction Party wants the reconstruction of areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina and the levee failures with the full participation of those whose lives were damaged by these disasters.
Malcolm's campaign issues rise from the needs of the people, like rent control, the reopening of public housing, funding the right to return, the reopening of Charity Hospital. He is part of an organization that discovered tens of millions of dollars, intended for the people, but denied to them, by the Red Cross. Malcolm is also expected to join the NAACP lawsuit against the Louisiana Secretary of State who has purged 20,000 New Orleans voters from the voter list. Malcolm Suber is willing to involve the people in the decisions about their future and the future of their city. His slogan is, "Nothing about us, without us, is for us."
With my own eyes I have seen pervasive roadblocks, military vehicles at the New Orleans Police Department, and am concerned that Blackwater mercenaries have not yet left the streets of New Orleans. And more troubling is that, despite the continued decrease in population in New Orleans, way has been made for $2 million condominiums to be built by the Trump real estate empire. Of course, none of this was mentioned in Mr. Donze's article. I hope the Times-Picayune will correct its egregious oversight of the Suber candidacy by doing a profile on the community work and significance of the Reconstruction Party candidacy of Malcolm Suber. More information on Suber's candidacy can be found at www.malcolmforcitycouncil.com.
Sincerely,
Cynthia McKinney
